Aims and Objectives
  • To define the concepts : information, document, documentation centre, documentary treatment
  • To state the principal theoretical differences between a documentation centre and a library (public or specialized)
  • To identify the context and the field of activity of every documentation centre
  • To prepare a simple questionnary to determine the principal user's needs
  • To decline and clarify briefly the successive stages of the documentary chain
  • To write an abstract (informative and indicative) of an article
  • To design and expose the greatest lines of organization of a documentation centre, relative with a given project and context

  • Historic insight of the origins and the evolution of documentation centres
  • Basic concepts and definitions
  • The "documentary chain"

The course develops the documentary chain specific to documentation centres, and thus the stages of the documentalist's work :

  • Analysis of user's needs
  • Seek and evaluation of information sources
  • Information and documents acquisition
  • Selection on the entering documents and information :
    • current selection (filter)
    • retrospective selection (pruning)
  • Recording of the documents: monographs and periodicals
  • Cataloguing
  • Documentary analysis :
    • Condensation: principles for writing abstracts
    • Indexing: types of documentary languages and their operation
  • Storage:
    • memorizing of information (primary and secondary)
    • physical storage of the documents: arrangement
  • Information diffusion :
    • documentary products
    • documentary services
  • Quality control/feedback:
  • relevance ratio : definition + calculation
  • exhaustiveness ratio : definition + calculation
