Number of Hours (h/year)60
Teaching staffSchrynemackers, Jean
Course UnitCompulsory
TermQuad. 1 and 2
CodeTECH-ICHI0007/1
Prerequisite

Basic training in physics, chemistry and mechanics applied and in study of materials. All courses of the previous years, in the chemical field (industrial chemistry, organic chemistry, general and chemical thermodynamics…) and general (studies and resistance of materials…)

Aims and Objectives

Theory: The course is not limited to the simple chemical study of the macromolecules, but it sticks to all the aspects interesting the engineer, as well manufacturer as user. It is also interested in the new products with special properties (biocompatible high efficiencies, polymers, biodegradable polymers, special copolymers, reactive polymer alloys…) It considers also the problem of becoming plastics after their use (problem of waste). To study the new applications of composite materials. Applications: Description of the mechanical properties of plastic materials.

Description

Theory: General information on the macromolecules (chemical structures and physical properties, chemical and mechanics which result from this); Theory of the various types of polymerizations and copolymerizations; Commercial plastics; Methods of development and working; Method of improvement of the properties; Principal families of traditional macromolecules; Recent polymers with high or particular performances; Methods of analysis and of controls; Plastics in waste (discharges, incineration, recycling) Polymeric and composite: introduction to polymers; structure of polymers; mechanical behavior of polymers; production; working and assembly; particulate, fibrous and expanded composites. Composite materials: Interest; components; processed products: fibres, loads, additives, resins…; manufactoring processes; mechanics of the laminates; various controls; general rules of design. Applications: Determination of the temperature of Vicat softening of thermoplastics; Measurement of the resistance to the Charpy shock of the rigid matters; Tests of torsion; Tensile tests.
