Aims and Objectives

At the end of the first year, students must be able to assign one or several complete UDC numbers to various books, book reviews, periodical articles or definite subject matters (written examination). Students must also briefly compare Universal Decimal Classification with other general international classifications studied during the course (oral examination).

Description

Introduction to UDC : origins, decimal principle, available French-language tools for study. Structure and organization of systematic (classed) catalogues. Class marks and call numbers.

UDC indexing : theory and numerous exercises.

Other general bibliographic classifications : (Dewey, Library of Congress, Bliss, SISO…) : short theoretical summary of each.

Oral examinations

Assessment comprises two parts :

- a written examination (main part of the assessment) devoted to

UDC indexing exercices ;

- a complementary oral examination allowing to correct the written exercices and to assess more theoretical knowledge, such as memorization of UDC main class numbers, understanding od UDC origins, comparison with other classification schemes.
